Faced with elite competition Friday morning at the Nuttycombe Invitational, Missouri cross country made the most of its trip to Madison, walking away with crucial placements and sharp pacing across the board.
Behind another standout performance from sophomore Monica Wanjiku, the No. 19 Mizzou women delivered a strong team performance, securing a ninth-place finish in a 33-team championship 6K field featuring 18 nationally ranked programs. Meanwhile, the No. 29 Tiger men placed 31st overall in a massive
35-team 8K field headlined by top-ranked national teams.
Women’s Squad Take Top-10 Finish
The Tiger women posted a team score of 331 points to secure their ninth-place finish. West Virginia captured the overall team crown with an impressive 66 points, while Florida’s Judy Chepkoech won the individual 6K title in 19:19.5.
Mizzou’s top-10 performance finished ahead of No. 5 Iowa State, No. 11 Northwestern, No. 15 Stanford, No. 21 Minnesota, No. 29 Penn State, No. 23 Washington and No. 24 Providence.
Wanjiku placed 20th overall in a stacked field of 222 finishers, with a time of 19:43.5. While slightly off her career-best 6K pace, Wanjiku’s ability to grab a top-20 finish was exactly what the Tigers needed during this race.
Kobi Walker crossed the line in 35th place overall at 20:04.4. Walker’s top-50 finish gave the Tiger women two racers at the front of the pack heading into the postseason. Rahel Broemmel took 59th place at 20:25.0, followed closely by Suzy Lecoutre in 64th with a time of 20:29.0. Charlotte Cullen and Mirriam Chepkirui rounded out the scoring lineup for Mizzou, placing 153rd and 154th overall.
Men’s Lineup Debuts Kipchumba Against Stacked Field
In the men’s Championship 8K, the Tigers scored 703 points to place 31st overall against 21 nationally ranked top-30 programs. New Mexico claimed the team victory with 59 points, while Meshack Kipruto captured the individual title for the Lobos.
The meet marked the official Mizzou debut for freshman Jean Kipchumba. After having not competed with the Tigers first three meets, Kipchumba officially suited up and paced the squad with an 86th-place finish in 23:48.9.
Elijah Limo joined Kipchumba in the top 100, crossing the finish line 96th overall in 23:54.8. Tyler Freiner placed 148th with a time of 24:12.1, while Raymond Kipkoech finished 180th in 24:26.9. Joshua Allison, Carter Spradling and Emmanuel Kiprop completed the lineup for Mizzou, placing 193rd, 202nd and 227th.
Though the men finished behind SEC contenders such as fourth-place Arkansas, fifth-place Florida and 12th-place Tennessee, Mizzou finished ahead of conference rival Oklahoma and finished in close range of Georgia and Ole Miss.
With crucial head-to-head points secured in Madison and Kipchumba officially integrated into the lineup, Mizzou now turns its full attention toward hosting the conference’s best at the SEC Championships at Gans Creek on Oct. 30.
