Cubs manager Craig Counsell announced in his postgame remarks Friday that Javier Assad would start today’s game against the Marlins.

And so, Assad has indeed been recalled from his relegation to Triple-A Iowa and has rejoined the 28-man active roster for the start this afternoon.

Overall this year in 22 games covering 83.1 innings, Assad has a 3.46 ERA and 1.104 WHIP, numbers basically in line with his entire MLB career. But in 17 games since May 1: 2.24 ERA, 0.995 WHIP, 6.0 percent walk rate in 64.1

Tyler Ferguson has been optioned to Iowa to make room for Assad on the active roster. Ferguson made one appearance this week, Tuesday vs. Milwaukee, allowing one run (a home run to Joey Ortiz) in 1.2 innings. Overall Ferguson posted a 3.63 ERA and 0.865 WHIP in 17 games for the Cubs this year.
