Bayern Munich’s defense could look very different by the time the transfer window closes, and two of the biggest question marks surround Kim Min-jae and Hiroki Itō.
Kim’s situation has been the subject of transfer speculation for months. After arriving as one of Europe’s most sought-after defenders, his standing in the squad has fluctuated, and recent reports continue to link him with clubs outside Germany. Jonathan Tah’s arrival has only increased the competition for minutes at center-back, making
Kim’s long-term future one of the biggest storylines of Bayern Munich’s summer.
Itō presents a different case. Injuries have disrupted his time with Bayern Munich, but when healthy, his versatility gives Vincent Kompany another option at both center-back and left-back. A player capable of filling multiple roles is often difficult to replace, especially during a long campaign filled with Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and Champions League matches. While reports have suggested that Bayern Munich could listen to offers under the right circumstances, there is also a strong argument for keeping a defender with Itō’s flexibility.
The arrival of Nathaniel Brown could prove to be the nail in the coffin for one — or both players, too.
The biggest factor may simply come down to opportunity. If Bayern Munich receives a substantial offer for Kim Min-jae, selling him could create room for other investments. Itō, meanwhile, may be viewed as valuable depth because of his ability to cover multiple positions, provided he is fully fit.
So what do you think?
Will both defenders still be wearing Bayern Munich jerseys when the calendar flips to September? Will only one survive the summer transfer window? Or could Bayern Munich surprise everyone and move on from both players before the new season is fully underway?
