All 26 UFC Shanghai athletes hit the scale at the official weigh-ins event, but not everybody made their mark.
The most high-profile weight miss belongs to Andre Lima, a formerly undefeated Flyweight prospect who teased a Bantamweight move after his shocking upset loss to Kevin Borjas back in June. Instead, he opted to remain down at Flyweight and missed the mark at 127 pounds. His opponent, Namsrai Batbayar, did make weight and the match is expected to remain as the “Prelims” headliner.
Fortunately,
only one other matchup was affected by the other two weight misses. A would-be Strawweight matchup between Jingnan Xiong vs. Julia Polastri saw Xiong weigh in at 117 pounds, while Polastri topped out at 118.5 pounds. At the time of writing, the Xiong vs. Polastri bout is still expected to happen on the early “Prelims” portion of the event.
Typically, fighters who miss weight are fined by the athletic commission overseeing the event. Because China doesn’t have government-sanctioned combat sports regulators like those found in the United States, UFC is acting as its own commission and likely instituted its own fines.
