As Bayern Munich crushed SC Freiburg on Saturday, the team showed in another game that they can find a way to win despite the circumstances. Individual improvement paired with excellent chemistry have been the two pillars of the current wave of success that Bayern is enjoying. Backing all of this is the Mia San Mia philosophy that every Bayern player embodies completely. French defender Dayot Upamecano reflected exactly that as he scored an important goal in the 6-2 win against Freiburg.
A powerful header to take the lead
After the
duo of Lennart Karl and Michael Olise equalized to level the scores at 2-2, it was Upamecano who scored the goal to take the lead. He deftly directed the corner kick into the back of the net with the finesse of a striker — and good he did, as Bayern needed some extra presence to negate the loaded defense. Upa with his physicality created the space and tucked the ball in with a beautiful touch.
Commenting on his goal post the game (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Upamecano said, “The goal was very important. I’m happy with my first goal of the season. We have a great coach and a great team, we’re playing very good football and we want to win every game.”
Still more to come
Despite a shaky start, Bayern rallied to together to score six goals and hold off Freiburg from scoring anymore. Aside from his goal, the Frenchman pitched in crucially with five headed clearances winning five of his six duels. He has stitched together a series of strong performances in all competitions and is looking the most confident he’s ever been. However, Upamecano denied that this was the peak of his career.
“No. I can give even more,” he said in a simple yet confident answer to Kerry Hau’s question to the matter.
Coming up against Arsenal’s fluid attack in the Champions League, Upa will be crucial for Bayern to put out a strong performance. Who would you pick to fill the backline against Arsenal ? Let us know in the comments below. And thank you for reading.
