Winning 11 of their last 12 SEC contests, a red-hot Aggie Baseball team heads to Gainesville, Fla., to face a ranked Florida Gators (28-14, 10-8 SEC) squad. No. 7 Texas A&M (31-7, 12-5) are searching for their fifth straight conference series win but enter a stadium that has not treated them well historically.
Tuesday’s home game against UTSA was postponed due to inclement weather, and so the Maroon and White will continue a season-long road trip, playing
six consecutive ballgames away from College Station. A&M passed last week’s road series at LSU with flying colors, sweeping the Bayou Bengals for the first time since 1978. This week, they will have to be successful against a team they are 4-9 in games played in Gainesville.
No. 21 Florida has had a roller coaster of a season, starting 13-1 on the year. A series defeat at home to High Point raised questions right before SEC play began. A sweep of South Carolina, then swept by Alabama in Tuscaloosa. A road sweep of Arkansas, then a series defeat at home to Ole Miss. A road series win against top-5 Georgia, then a home series loss to ranked Auburn. Additionally, aside from taking all three midweeks from the rival Seminoles, the Gators have lost their last three midweeks from teams not named Florida State. Jacksonville beat them twice in their park, while SWAC leader Bethune-Cookman also upset the Blue and Orange 13-7 at home.
The Aggies and Gators share Ole Miss, Georgia, Auburn, Oklahoma and LSU as common opponents. Both teams have already faced the Bulldogs this season, with Florida taking two of three and A&M going 1-2 against Georgia.
For Texas A&M to buck the trend of rough results in the Sunshine State, the Aggies need to once again lean on their offense. They average the most runs per game (9.71), draw the most walks (249), own the best on-base percentage (.444), and sit second or third in all other offensive categories among the 16 SEC squads.
Individually, one through nine of this A&M lineup is potent. Somebody different steps up each day. Last week, Jorian Wilson continued to punch above his weight as a freshman, complemented by Gavin Grahovac. Caden Sorrell left the yard in the series finale at LSU and leads the team in homers (18) and RBI (59).
Despite the offense taking the main storylines, the pitching is doing a pretty good job of stealing headlines themselves. Shane Sdao was solid on Friday, backed by another impressive outing from Aidan Sims. Weston Moss was good on Sunday to help secure the sweep. The bullpen has been equally as good, if not better than the rotation. Having Gavin Lyons, Ethan Darden or Clayton Freshcorn come in out of the ‘pen is a great asset and not a worry. Those three arms were the only relievers used against the Tigers last week, but they combined for 11 innings of work, allowed two earned runs and struck out 14 LSU hitters. More of the same would go a long way to a series victory over the Gators. Freshcorn has been a clutch game ender this season, earning national recognition in April.
Texas A&M is searching for their first SEC series win in Gainesville and just their second in program history (2-1, 2006). Across their last three road series against Florida, the Aggies are victorious in one game (Saturday, Mar. 16, 2024 – game two of the series), with a total 1-8 record. This A&M team won’t shy away from historic moments, having accomplished two over the last two weekends. Taking two of three from the Gators would certainly all but solidify an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament and keep the ship headed in the right direction towards hosting a regional in Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
National attention will be on the series, as Saturday’s 4:00 p.m. matinee will be available on the SEC Network. The other two games of the series against #21 Florida will be on SEC Network+ at Condron Family Ballpark.
