After a day off on Thursday, the Colorado Rockies return to the familiar grounds of Coors Field to do battle with the ailing San Diego Padres.
The Padres are still fighting for first place in the National League West, entering Friday just two games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. They’ve lost four straight games, though, which means the Rockies have a chance to really play spoiler if they can secure a series victory.
To that end, Colorado will send Kyle Freeland (3-14, 5.41 ERA) to the mound. Freeland’s
last outing was short-lived as he was one of the players ejected after a kerfuffle with the San Francisco Giants last week. He’ll look to go a bit longer against a team that he’s had some trouble with in the past.
K-Free last faced the Dads in April, wherein he was dinged up for five runs in as many innings.
The Padres will counter with Nick Pivetta (13-4, 2.84 ERA). Pivetta’s been one of the most consistent arms in the game in 2025 and has been a key piece in San Diego’s postseason quest. His last start saw him allow three runs in five innings against the Minnesota Twins, his first non-quality start in five outings.
Luckily, the Rockies have found some success against the nine-year veteran. In two previous appearances against Colorado this season, Pivetta’s given up 10 hits and six runs in 11 innings. Hopefully the Rox can find a way to keep their offense rolling against the talented right-hander on Friday.
Keep an eye on Brenton Doyle who, after a rough first few months, is hitting over .350 in the second half. He’s 2-for-5 with an RBI against Pivetta. Will he keep up that hot streak tonight? Let’s find out.
