Three of the four Wild Card series were decided on Wednesday. The White Sox took out the Astros by again jumping out to an early lead and then pulling away. In the process they won their first postseason series since their 2005 World Series title. The Yankees pitching staff continued to work over a pretty hapless looking Boston Red Sox lineup, while Ben Rice and rookie George Lombard Jr. continued to power the Yankees’ offense despite the lack of Aaron Judge. Finally, the Cubs chances depended largely
on their offense getting red hot, and it just didn’t happen. Their pitching staff was always pretty suspect but they weren’t really the problem as the Padres held the north siders to just one run in two games.
The divisional round will get underway on Saturday, but there is one series left to be decided. The Philadelphia Phillies lost on Tuesday and they were hanging on by a thread on Wednesday as the Atlanta Braves led 3-1 heading into the eighth inning. Instead, Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper came through with back-to-back solo shots against lefty Dylan Lee to tie the game. They ultimately scratched out a run extras and blanked the Braves to win in 10 innings.
So, Thursday’s 2:00 p.m. ET matchup on Peacock is for all the marbles. Whoever ends up starting for each team won’t matter much as this is an all hands on deck scenario.
