Last year’s NFL season opener between the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens was delayed before kickoff due to lightning. This year’s NFL opener between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys was suspended mid-game due to lightning. In both instances, the defending Super Bowl champions hung on late for the home victory.
Former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer’s debut as an NFL head coach ended in a 24-20 defeat to the Eagles, who scored all of their points on their first
four possessions before both offenses stalled out post-weather delay. It was a shootout in the first half, with the Eagles up 21-20 following the Cowboys’ utter refusal to acknowledge Jalen Hurts is a running and scrambling threat, while Adoree’ Jackson was allowing any opposing Cowboys receiver the freedom to catch a pass.
And yet, the story of the game was before the first snap of the season. The spit seen ‘round the world by Eagles star defensive tackle Jalen Carter. Cameras (and an official, of course) caught Carter spitting at Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, which ended his night with more ejections than snaps played.
That could honestly be worthy of a suspension to deliberately spit at/spit on someone. But wait… was there… a SECOND SPITTER?!!!
I’m sure this will be addressed later by Prescott in the post-game press conference but I don’t have the time or interest to follow this story more on a site about the Seahawks.
Jalen Hurts killed the Cowboys with his legs, scoring twice and leading all players with 62 yards rushing. Saquon Barkley only had 60 yards but he scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown late in the first half. Javonte Williams scored both of Dallas’ touchdowns, while CeeDee Lamb caught 7 passes for 110 yards, but had two bad drops and was unable to come up with a catchable ball on the game-deciding 4th down.
Perhaps the biggest play of the game was actually former Eagles running back Miles Sanders fumbling the ball deep in Eagles territory, mere minutes after a 49-yard dash down the sidelines set Dallas up in the red zone. The game was suspended for over an hour due to lightning strikes, with Mother Nature irate at Sanders’ double agent act.
One down, 271 games to go, and we still await the first touchdown pass of the season. We’ve got the Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil on Friday night, live on YouTube. Of course, the real main event happens on Sunday: the Seattle Seahawks against the San Francisco 49ers at Lumen Field.
