The Indianapolis Colts announced on Tuesday that the team signed cornerback Wyett Ekeler to their practice squad and waived offensive tackle Zach Thomas in a corresponding roster move.
Ekeler is well known for being the younger half-brother of former All-Pro NFL running back Austin Ekeler, who is currently playing for the Washington Commanders. The two are reportedly very close with Austin serving as a mentor for Wyett in regards to his professional football career.
As for Wyett, the former undrafted
5’11”, 190 pound free agent safety out of Wyoming recorded 46 tackles (28 solo), an interception, and a pass defensed during 9 games in 2024.
He was Honorable Mention All-Mountain West for the Cowboys back in 2023.
The younger Ekeler went undrafted following the 2025 NFL Draft, and the Colts are the first professional team he’s apparently surfaced with since.
Here’s the overview from his NFL.com draft profile:
Overview
The younger brother of NFL running back Austin Ekeler, Wyett’s explosiveness flashes on tape with his pursuit burst. He’s a fairly smooth athlete in space when covering, but he appears to lack the instincts in coverage to make plays on the football and is too often out of position or completely blocked when he’s near the line in run support. His bloodline, pro-day testing and special-teams potential could help his cause.
In the wake of injuries to the Colts offensive line, Thomas was signed as extra organizational depth around mid-December, but had yet to appear in an NFL game with Indianapolis before being waived.
With starting left tackle Bernhard Raimann returning last weekend, there was less of a need for Thomas.
