Caleb Wilson, a very promising 6-9 freshman Tar Heel, may have had a chat with UNC coach Hubert Davis today.
On the Locked on Tar Heels podcast, Wilson said some provocative things about UNC’s Big Four rivals, like this: “I don’t like Duke, I don’t like NC State, I don’t like Wake Forest. This year we’re putting belt on everybody, I’m talking real belt, sparkle, and bedazzle.”
One of the most notable things in the post Dean Smith UNC is that there was a level of discipline that rarely broke down, and
that included tossing red meat to the other school’s fan bases.
If you don’t remember, or are too young to know this, UNC players were incredibly bland in public. Just as every bench player dutifully jumped up to applaud every good play, just as players pointed to the guy who got them the ball for a basket, Tar Heels rarely gave the other side fodder.
Like most former Smith players, Davis idolized his coach and tries to emulate him, including not cursing. What he can’t emulate is the level of sophistication and discipline Smith brought to his program, and that includes stuff like this.
It might not matter. It’s certainly possible that Wilson is good enough to back this up. We’re not sure if UNC has home-and-home with State and Wake Forest, but Wilson just made at least five more games more difficult than they had to be. This will be on every bulletin board and phone already and the players on those teams will remember. With Davis’s status already somewhat tenuous, he can’t be happy with what his star freshman.
