There is something special about Senior Day at Notre Dame Stadium. The final walk down the tunnel, the familiar sounds of the Notre Dame Victory March, and the realization that, for a group of players who have spent years wearing the blue and gold, this will be their last opportunity to take the field in front of the home crowd. It’s a day filled with pride, gratitude, and more than a few emotions. And regardless of how a season has unfolded, every senior hopes to walk off that field one last time
with a victory.
For Notre Dame’s seniors in 2003, that final Saturday in South Bend carried a little extra weight.
The season hadn’t exactly gone according to plan. After Tyrone Willingham’s impressive 10-3 debut in 2002, expectations were high heading into his second year as head coach. But the Irish had struggled throughout the fall, and by the time Brigham Young arrived at Notre Dame Stadium on November 15, Notre Dame was sitting at 3-6. National championship hopes had disappeared long ago, and the possibility of a bowl appearance was hanging by a thread.
The previous Saturday, the Irish had needed a last-second field goal from D.J. Fitzpatrick to escape with a 27-24 victory over Navy. It was the kind of game that summed up much of the 2003 season: plenty of fight, but very little breathing room.
With just three games remaining, some observers had already written off the season as one in which Notre Dame was simply playing for pride. But Willingham and his players weren’t quite ready to accept that assessment. There was still a mathematical possibility of finishing 6-6, and the seniors were determined to make the most of the time they had left.
Among those preparing for their final appearance at Notre Dame Stadium were Julius Jones, Courtney Watson, Vontez Duff, Derek Curry, Jim Molinaro, and Carlyle Holiday. They had experienced coaching changes, difficult losses, and the excitement of a 2002 season that briefly returned Notre Dame to the national conversation. Now, with their final home game approaching, they had one more opportunity to give the Irish faithful something to celebrate.
And on a chilly November afternoon in front of 80,795 fans, they did exactly that.
Notre Dame’s defense wasted little time making its presence felt. BYU entered the game with a passing attack that had the potential to challenge the Irish secondary, but the Cougars quickly discovered that moving the football against Notre Dame would be easier said than done. The Irish forced turnovers on BYU’s first two possessions, and Fitzpatrick converted the second opportunity into a 27-yard field goal.
BYU responded with an 18-yard touchdown run by Reynaldo Brathwaite, taking a 7-3 lead midway through the first quarter. It was a brief reminder that the Irish weren’t going to be handed a victory simply because it was Senior Day.
Notre Dame’s offense continued to struggle with finishing drives, settling for a pair of additional Fitzpatrick field goals. His 31-yarder late in the first quarter pulled the Irish within a point, and a 34-yarder in the second quarter gave Notre Dame a 9-7 lead. The defense was doing its part, but the offense needed someone to provide a spark.
Enter Julius Jones.
The senior running back had already delivered one of the most memorable performances of the season, rushing for a then-school-record 262 yards against Pittsburgh in October. Against BYU, he was once again ready to shoulder the load.
With just over two minutes remaining in the first half, Notre Dame took possession near midfield. Aided by two 15-yard penalties against the Cougars, the Irish moved down the field, and Jones finished the drive with a one-yard touchdown run with 25 seconds remaining before halftime. Notre Dame headed to the locker room with a 16-7 advantage, and for the first time that afternoon, the Irish had begun to create some separation.
The second half would belong to Jones and the Notre Dame defense.
On the Irish’s second possession of the third quarter, freshman quarterback Brady Quinn connected with Rhema McKnight for a 33-yard gain, helping move Notre Dame into scoring position. Jones then broke through the BYU defense for a 23-yard touchdown run. Suddenly, Notre Dame was ahead 23-7, and the Irish faithful had plenty to cheer about.
Jones was doing what he had done so well throughout the season: finding openings, breaking tackles, and turning difficult yards into meaningful gains. BYU head coach Gary Crowton was impressed by what he saw, particularly Jones’ patience and ability to keep moving after contact. Crowton called him an outstanding back, and it was difficult to argue with that assessment.
But Jones wasn’t the only senior making his presence felt.
Notre Dame’s defense was putting together one of its most complete performances of the season. The Irish forced four turnovers, including three interceptions, and held BYU to just 53 rushing yards. The Cougars managed only five passing yards and minus-five rushing yards during the third quarter, a remarkable stretch in which Notre Dame’s defense completely disrupted the BYU offense.
Senior linebacker Derek Curry credited the coaching staff for preparing the Irish defense and putting the players in position to succeed. But preparation was only part of the equation. The seniors still had to execute, and on this afternoon, they were determined to do just that.
Notre Dame controlled the football for nearly 37 minutes, keeping BYU’s offense on the sidelines and allowing the Irish to dictate the pace of the game. The Cougars had some success through the air, with quarterback Matt Berry throwing for 231 yards, but Notre Dame repeatedly came up with stops when it mattered.
Meanwhile, Quinn was continuing to gain valuable experience in what had been a challenging freshman season. He completed 15 of 30 passes for 156 yards, with McKnight emerging as his favorite target. The sophomore receiver caught eight passes for 98 yards, providing the Irish with a dependable option in the passing game. Notre Dame finished the afternoon with 204 rushing yards and 156 passing yards, the first time all season the Irish had surpassed 150 yards in both categories in the same game.
Fitzpatrick added his fourth field goal early in the fourth quarter, extending Notre Dame’s lead to 26-7. BYU managed one final touchdown when Berry scored on a one-yard run, but any hopes of a Cougar comeback were short-lived.
With less than a minute remaining, Jones delivered one final Senior Day highlight, scoring from 13 yards out to put the finishing touches on Notre Dame’s 33-14 victory.
When the afternoon was over, Jones had carried the football 35 times for 161 yards and three touchdowns. All three Notre Dame touchdowns belonged to the senior running back, who had saved one of his most complete performances for his final game at Notre Dame Stadium.
For the Irish, the victory was significant for several reasons. It was their first win by double digits that season, it avenged a 21-14 loss to BYU in the teams’ previous meeting in 1994, and it provided a rare opportunity to enjoy the final minutes without worrying about whether the outcome would come down to another last-second kick.
Willingham seemed particularly pleased about that last part, remarking afterward that it was always nicer not to need a last-second field goal to secure a victory.
Senior offensive tackle Jim Molinaro echoed that sentiment, explaining how good it felt to look at the scoreboard in the fourth quarter and see a comfortable lead rather than another desperate situation.
But perhaps Molinaro’s most meaningful comments came when he reflected on the realization that he had just played his final game at Notre Dame Stadium.
“You kind of get to look back and stare at the stadium for the last time. It’s kind of emotional, but the season is not over yet.”
That last part was important.
The victory improved Notre Dame’s record to 4-6, and Willingham still believed there was something left for his team to accomplish. Two games remained, and the possibility of finishing 6-6 had not yet disappeared. The Irish weren’t ready to close the book on their season, even if the rest of the college football world had already moved on.
Notre Dame would go on to defeat Stanford 57-7 before falling to Syracuse 38-12 in the season finale, finishing with a 5-7 record. There would be no bowl appearance, and the 2003 season would ultimately be remembered as a disappointing follow-up to Willingham’s promising first year.
But not every memorable Notre Dame victory comes during a championship season.
Sometimes, the games that stay with us are the ones in which a struggling team finds a way to put everything together, even if only for one afternoon. Sometimes, it’s about a senior running back refusing to go quietly, a defense determined to make one final statement, or a group of players soaking in the sights and sounds of Notre Dame Stadium before walking away for the last time.
On November 15, 2003, Julius Jones and his fellow seniors got their moment.
And for one last Saturday in South Bend, they gave the Notre Dame faithful something to celebrate.
