The Commanders waived sixth-round running back Kaytron Allen on Thursday, and then GM Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn spent some of their Friday public appearances saying they liked him and hoped to sign him the practice squad.
That won’t be possible. The Miami Dolphins claimed him off waivers, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Friday afternoon.
The Dolphins have a super high
spot on the NFL waiver wire order, which is now based on the reverse order of the league standings. Miami is 0-4. The Dolphins also recently lost running back De’Von Achane to a torn ACL, so the claim makes sense.
Allen endeared himself to fans with his tough rushing style, Penn State highlights, engaging personality and the fact he prefers the nickname “Fatman.”
During his brief time in Washington, Allen had 12 rushes for 41 yards in four regular-season games. The Commanders faced a logjam at running back and real needs at other positions, creating the gamble of waiving Allen while trying to get him to the practice squad.
That attempt was unsuccessful. The Commanders have Bill Croskey-Merritt and Rachaad White available. They also signed veteran Austin Ekeler last week and have Jeremy McNcihols nearing a return off injured reserve.
