What is the story about?
The
first goalless draw of World Cup 2026 came in the game no one expected as Spain were held by tournament debutants Cape Verde in Atlanta, Georgia in Monday’s Group H opener. Six Barcelona players featured on the afternoon, including Lamine Yamal who come off the bench on his World Cup debut but couldn’t do enough to help his team find the net against a very well-organized Cape Verde team that absolutely earned their first-ever World Cup point in remarkable fashion.
Reactions & Observations
- Spain’s performance in the first 70 minutes was extremely disappointing. With the exception of two big chances missed by Ferran Torres, La Roja were slow and unimaginative in possession, passing the ball around without creating any danger. There was little movement and no risks taken, and the entire stadium eventually grew tired and started to boo the Spanish for their lack of aggression.
- Cape Verde’s defensive performance also contributed to Spain’s poor showing as the underdogs put on a clinic with their organization and effort, and goalkeeper Vozinha was ready to save any dangerous shot or cross coming his way.
- But Luis de la Fuente had a big card to play off the bench, and Lamine Yamal came on for his World Cup debut and immediately injected pace, dribbling and creativity to Spain’s attack. His initial impact didn’t last long, however, and Spain couldn’t keep up the momentum and sleepwalked to a goalless draw at the final whistle.
- The result is obviously shocking but not surprising given what we saw on the pitch: Cape Verde played the game of their lives and Spain never bothered to get out of first gear. Lamine Yamal did his best, but it wasn’t enough to inspire a toothless La Roja performance.
