Following a major cold streak at the end of the season that resulted in losing six of their last eight games — including being swept in a three-game series at home vs rival Ohio State for the first time since 1994 — the Michigan baseball team was officially left out of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season.
It’s really unfortunate because Michigan was in a great spot to make the NCAA Tournament just a couple weeks ago. The Wolverines were winners of seven straight Big Ten series prior
to the season finale against the Buckeyes. They started off strong in the Big Ten Tournament by defeating Rutgers, 10-0, in their first game. However, losses in two of the next three games — including a brutal 6-4 loss to Nebraska in the tournament quarterfinals in a game that began around midnight ET due to weather — resulted in them bowing out of the tournament and having their postseason hopes hang in the balance.
Michigan put itself in a strong position to make the NCAA Tournament during the middle of the season due to the seven straight conference series wins, but Tracy Smith and company just couldn’t do enough in the Big Ten Tournament to punch their ticket to the postseason.
The long offseason officially begins for the Wolverines, who will look to take another step forward under the guidance of Smith and his coaching staff in 2027.
