The good news is that Caleb Downs has changed his jersey number. Many people have been anxious to read that sentence since learning that the player they can’t believe made it to the Cowboys was originally set to wear 18 and not the number that he wore in college.
Downs wore 2 at Ohio State and many have assumed that this would be the case in the NFL as well. The issue is that veteran Cobie Durant is currently listed as number 2 for the team so there has to be a bit of a deal made on some level. Both
Caleb and head coach Brian Schottenheimer joked about this during his introductory press conference with the team.
While there has been a change, it has not been to number 2. Downs is now listed as number 13 for the Cowboys and the team is officially selling jerseys with that number on it.
For all of the number aficionados out there, 13 is hardly an improvement on 18. What’s more is that 13 is not 2.
It would seem that something happened as a change did indeed occur. Downs wore 18 during the team’s rookie minicamp last week and if this whole thing is just a matter of time until he is going to receive 2, why switch to 13? Does this suggest that he may actually wear 13?
Only time will tell. But for now update your records.
Caleb Downs is number 13 for the Dallas Cowboys.
