Thanks to reporting from Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, whom the Liverpool FC fanbase made an acquaintance of last summer during the Alexander Isak transfer saga, the Victor Munoz transfer came together fairly rapidly, within twenty-four hours.
The move does indeed have the hallmarks of previous FSG-era Liverpool transfers, where a deal sprang out of nowhere and was completed quickly, like Fabinho, or the time the Reds gazumped Tottenham for Luis Diaz.
It’s especially similar to the Diaz deal, where it was revealed that LFC’s recruitment was always in contact with the player’s representatives and entered the fray once it looked like he may move to another club. It’s an especially bad look for Newcastle, who have seemingly made a habit of long, played-out negotiations for lower fees, only for another party to swoop in.
Víctor Muñoz is by no means a finished product, but he’s already a Spanish international and adds speed, intensity and pressing, some ingredients we desperately lacked throughout last season. He will become the first new piece of Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool team. Welcome to Anfield, Victor.
