This afternoon, the Colorado Rockies will play their 162nd and final game of the 2026 Major League Baseball season. For some fans, the final pitch can’t come soon enough.
Despite periods of promising baseball—like when the Rockies had one of the best offenses in baseball mid-season—and individual great seasons like those of Jake McCarthy and potential Rookie of the Year candidate TJ Rumfield, the Rockies have largely limped to the finish line. In September they have won just six games and suffered
two extended losing streaks of five or more contests. They have been swept by the Detroit Tigers, the New York Yankees, and the Ariozona Diamondbacks.
The Rockies have a long, dark winter ahead of them as “the climb” of a rebuild continues. They will need to evaluate their current personnel on both the player and coaching side, potentially bring the Kris Bryant saga to it’s conclusion, navigate rumors of an ownership change, and continue to push towards becoming a team Coloradoans can be proud of once again. However, before all of that the league will need to complete what promises to be a brutal labor dispute towards a new collective bargaining agreement and an almost certain lockout.
However, the Rockies now have a chance to end their season on one final high note. After playing spoiler last night in a 9-6 win against the Chicago White Sox, the Rockies collected several individual milestones and could wrap up the year with a series win. Now done for the year, Rockies Iron Man rookie TJ Rumfield sits with a .300 batting average and a chance to win the National League on-base percentage crown. Hunter Goodman’s 40th and 41st home runs put him in exclusive company both in Rockies and MLB history.
