Former Texas Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira is running for Congress, per a press release that came out today. He is running for the Republican nomination in the 21st District of Texas. The incumbent in that district, Chip Roy, is not running for re-election, as he is running for state attorney general instead.
So this is a bit of news on an off day that I’m sure isn’t going to result in conflict in the comments of this post. We shall see how long the comments remain open.
Teixeira, of course,
was the Rangers’ first round pick in 2001, selected fifth overall. After four and a half seasons with the club, which saw him finish fifth in the 2003 Rookie of the Year voting, win two Silver Slugger Awards and two Gold Glove Awards, and finish as high as seventh in the Most Valuable Player voting, he was traded, along with Ron Mahay, to the Atlanta Braves at the 2007 trade deadline for Elvis Andrus, Neftali Feliz, Matt Harrison, Jarrod Saltamacchia and Beau Jones. The Braves traded him a year later to the Angels. After the 2008 season, he signed with the New York Yankees, where he spent the final eight seasons of his career.
Teixeira ended his career with a .268/.360/.509 slash line, 1862 hits, 409 home runs, and a 50.5 bWAR.
