Over the WNBA offseason, the Golden State Valkyries picked up free agent Gabby Williams, who chose to leave the Seattle Storm for Golden State. Williams signed a 3-year, $3.7 million contract with the Valkyries on April 12th, after free agency finally began in March after a lengthy battle between the WNBA Players’ Association and the WNBA.
When asked why she chose the Valks, Williams put it simply — she wanted to win.
Going into their sophomore season, the Valkyries already have a playoff run under
their belt — and their head coach, Natalie Nakase, started off her head coaching run with a WNBA Coach of the Year award. Most teams take a few years to find their footing, but not the Valks — they hit the ground running, or, rather, took to the skies.
“I think there were two or three key factors in making my decision,” Williams said in a press conference last week. “Number one was ‘where am I going to win?”
The Valkyries will be facing off against the Seattle Storm on May 8th in Seattle to kick off their second season.
