Chelsea announced the signing of Emiliano Martínez this morning, doing so just hours before today’s game against Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge … in which, as it turns out, the 33-year-old goalkeeper is already starting! So we must have actually gotten the deal done by Friday’s registration deadline. Either way, he’s here and he’s straight into the fire.
Martínez joins after spending all summer (if not longer) looking for a change of scenery after six years and over 250 appearances at Aston
Villa. Chelsea meanwhile, seemingly, only decided to get a new goalkeeper after (yet another) poor performance from Robert Sánchez last weekend, in our opening game of the season. Better late than never, I guess!
A World Cup-winner coming in at a reported £7.5m makes this a low-risk, high-reward situation, and without blocking Mike Penders’ potential path to becoming our long-term solution at the spot. Martínez has signed a three-year contract.
