The build-up…
We last took on Hull City in the early rounds of the League Cup back in 2020. Back then it was the opening day of the season
and behind closed doors due to COVID restrictions. It was also two League One sides slugging it out to see who might be one of the big boys for a payday; now we meet as two Premier League sides.
Not only that, but one is playing in the Europa League, and the other occupies a Champions League spot. But it does mean that ambitions are very different to when we played that tie around six years ago. As then, both sides had bigger fish to fry, but at the same time we’re both in a position where it could quite easily turn into a decent cup run.
The Brentford fixture kicked off a period where we play five games in sixteen days, two are against two of the best sides in Europe, and we have our first European tie in over fifty years sandwiched in between. Tonight’s game comes before all that fun, and it’s no surprise Le Bris suggested he would make nine or ten changes from the eleven we saw at the weekend.
Having said that, he also said our two new big signings down the left-hand side would likely feature, so we could get a first look at Methalie and Fofana.
As far as the League Cup is concerned, it’s difficult to see how we can look at it as a priority when we haven’t won a game in the competition since October 2021, when we finished QPR off on penalties at Loftus Road. Since then, we’ve fallen at the first hurdle.
On another note, Hull are unbeaten in their five visits to the Stadium of Light in all competitions, in a run that stretches back to the Chris Coleman era when he finally steered us to victory at home after around a year of not experiencing the feeling.

The bookies have the Lads at 4/6 to win the game, while Hull are 15/4 to progress through to the next round, and the draw is 5/2.

In probably the same way as a clock, I was bang on with the 1-1 draw at the weekend, so let’s hope it happens again as I’m going for a win for the Lads. After guessing what our side might be and the fact that we might have two new signings down the left, I reckon we’ll go out with a strong side tonight and do the business.
