- One of the big questions about the UW Football depth chart that persists well into fall practices is whether there’s a clear starting-caliber option in the running back room. Jonah Coleman is in the NFL, Adam Mohammed is at Cal, and Jordan Washington is recovering from a serious neck injury. That has left sophomore Quaid Carr the presumptive starter in week one. RB Coach Scottie Graham picked Carr out of Servite HS in Anaheim even though he had a middling recruiting rating and a lukewarm interest from top teams. Christian Caple posted an analysis on Carr and his self-belief in his ability to excel. Nobody can no for sure whether Carr will succeed until kickoff, but Caple’s reporting definitely gives reason for optimism.
- Speaking of Caple, his “Say Who, Say Pod” podcast name is about to get more engagement. UW has announced that they will bring fans into the “Say Who, Say What” chant that UW players do before running onto the field. I’m naturally skeptical of the Catch 22 of inventing a new tradition, but I do like the chant and adding fans to something that grew from the players sounds fun.
- Other than RB, arguably the hottest offensiveposition battle headed into Week 1 is at RG. Both Geirean Hatchett and Champ Taulealea have staked their claim to the starting spot. Hatchett has more of a track record of solid performance, but Taulealea got his feet wet as a true freshman and popped in spring practices while Hatchett recovered from injury. Both players are putting the team first in the competition and have openly said they will support their teammate if they win the battle.
- Both the Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams are in action on Thursday in a home double header starting at 5:00 PM PT. The women’s team will play firstagainst Gonzaga. Following that, the men will take on #3 Portland.
