Over the last three weeks, I’ve talked about the Orioles starters, relievers, and outfielders. It’s time for the infielders, including catchers, to get their turn. Although things weren’t as completely grim for this group as they were for the outfielders, in large part thanks to Pete Alonso being the best-hitting primary first baseman in all of baseball, there was certainly plenty of disappointment to be had across the diamond.
For a second straight year, the Orioles catching situation turned out
to be full of chaos, even though the year started exactly how they wanted it with Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo there. More surprises struck the infield thanks to the spring training injuries of Jordan Westburg and Jackson Holliday, with Westburg not getting to play at all this season.
There were pleasant surprises too, like Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Blaze Alexander. Enough of the fill-ins played very well that there could be quite a crowded picture heading into 2027. My thoughts on everybody from this week’s episode:
