Bayern Munich’s 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup saw the Bavarians lift their first “trophy” of the season. The scoreline arguably appears closer than it really should have been, given last season’s Double winner’s dominance of the first half, yet the Black and Yellows really took the game to Bayern in the second half and Miaxmilian Beier would have scored the game tying goal if Jonathan Tah had not made a superb recovery at the last second.
Numerous Dortmund players
impressed in the second half, but one who arguably looked good throughout the majority of the match was new signing Konstantinos Karetsas, the Greek attacking midfielder. He joined last season’s Bundesliga runners up after long and intense negotiations with former club Genk and cost the club a pretty penny, but his sparkling performances for the Belgian side had already indicated that fee would be worth it. Preseason performances and the match against Bayern just confirmed the impression that the player truly has star quality.
Perhaps it is not surprising, then, that Bayern’s Belgian head coach, Vincent Kompany, was left impressed by Dortmund’s new star signing. One of Bild’s Dortmund reporters, Michael Schröer, spoke to the former RSC Anderlecht player after the match. @iMiaSanMia captures his comments on Kompany and the latter’s appreciation of Karetsas:
“I used to be a Bayern Munich reporter, so we know each other a bit and exchanged greetings,” the reporter explained. “Then we talked about Borussia Dortmund. He [Kompany] knows that I’m now reporting on BVB. He told me who he thinks is quite good. New signing Karetsas, the Greek player who also has a Belgian background. He played in Genk and grew up in Belgium. Kompany told me that he’s really good and that I should keep an eye on him. It almost sounded like he’d had him on his list for a while. He really likes him.”
Kompany has publicly stated he follows the Belgian league, so it only makes sense he knows and has respect for one of the most oustanding performers in the league in recent years. It is a shame he decided to join Dortmund. Bayern were linked to him last year, after all. But at least the Bundesliga will be graced by his talent for the years to come.
