It’s a “good eats” edition this morning. No, not the TV show, although yes, I was a big fan. We’ve been mining our memories and opinions on Tar Heel teams, coaches, and players. Time to switch it up a little bit? I used to travel a lot on business. The realities of customer budget cycles and product utility compressed half my annual travel into the months of January through April. Peak basketball season. I’d check UNC’s schedule and make sure I had a place to watch, whether a bar at an airport or a pub
somewhere. Best thing I ever ate watching a UNC team fight for a W: Buffalo wings at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, where the whole wing craze supposedly started. I’d never tried wings to that point, but the Buffalo client swore I had to try them. The bar had a TV and a barkeep willing to accommodate the Tar Heel who braved a massive lake-effect snowfall to watch a game and try their legendary wings.
The Anchor Bar nailed it. Crispy skin, but a tender, moist interior. Perfect seasoning. The sauce was finger-licking good, but it didn’t overpower the chicken. Beating State at their place definitely enhanced the experience.
The only problem: I’ve been spoiled about wings every since. When we end up at one of the national joints for whatever reason, I’m ordering a salad and reliving the Anchor Bar in my head.
My wife on other hand says it’s a Kenan stadium hot dog for her. That’s not for lack of other contenders. She just digs stadium dogs. If we’re at a game, it’s our first stop.
What about you? What’s the best thing you ever ate or drank while watching UNC athletics? Alternatively, what’s your go-to-snack for watching at home?
What?! I’m too nervous to even think about eating during a game! Fair. To accommodate those in this category, we’ll expand things to include pre or post-game activities.
