The Pittsburgh Pirates are just a few weeks away from the start of Spring Training in Bradenton, so it’s time to wonder what the team will look like for the 2026 MLB season.
Bleacher Report writer Joel
Reuter came up with a projection for what he thinks the Opening Day lineup will look like on March 26 against the New York Mets at Citi Field.
Reuter has first baseman Spencer Horowitz leading off followed by new acquisition and second baseman Brandon Lowe. Right fielder Brian Reynolds will hit third and designated hitter and free agency signee Ryan O’Hearn bats cleanup. Reuter also believes the team will sign Eugenio Suárez before the start of the season, and he will bat fifth while playing third base. Shortstop Nick Gonzales will hit sixth while center fielder O’Neil Cruz lines up at No. 7. Joey Bart will be eighth in the order at catcher and left fielder Jake Mangum will end the batting order.
“With Brandon Lowe and Jake Mangum acquired via trade and Ryan O’Hearn signed to a two-year, $29 million deal, the Pirates offense has already undergone a much-needed face lift, but they still have a ways to go to be an above-average unit,” Reuter wrote.
“There is no clear fit for veteran slugger Eugenio Suárez right now, and his market is at least partially tethered to Alex Bregman’s decision, but he would be a great addition on a similar short-term deal to the one O’Hearn signed. That would allow Jared Triolo to serve as the utility infielder.”
There are a few options for manager Don Kelly to work with, especially with all of the new pieces added to the roster. The Pirates’ ceiling is much higher in 2026 than it was last year, and the hope is that the offense will support the pitching staff a little bit more than they did last season, which could lead to more wins.
