The Los Angeles Chargers are just over a week away from the start of the season, where they hope to be among the league’s top teams.
The Chargers are eyeing their third straight playoff appearance, but they are attacking this season a bit differently than the past two. The team has a new offensive coordinator in Mike McDaniel, who is part of the reason why ESPN analyst Ben Solak placed the Chargers at No. 4 in his watchability ranking of all 32 teams.
“The Chargers could easily have the coolest offense,
with Herbert, McDaniel, speedy running back Keaton Mitchell, second-year running back Omarion Hampton and a healthy No. 1 receiver in Ladd McConkey. Even if the defense takes a step back without Jesse Minter (now the head coach of the Ravens) calling the shots, the Chargers should be better equipped to score fast, score big and win shootouts,“ Solak wrote.
The only teams that ranked higher than the Chargers were the Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Rams and Chicago Bears, all of whom are in the NFC, making Los Angeles the most watchable team in the AFC.
An explosive offense should take some of the pressure off the defense. Los Angeles utilized its defense last season to become a top-five unit in the league, but defensive coordinator Jesse Minter left the organization to join the Baltimore Ravens as their head coach.
Chris O’Leary has taken over the defense, and they hope to be above average in the league if both the offense and the defense can play at a high level. The Chargers should not just be one of the most watchable teams in the league, but also one of the best.
