Bayern Munich supervisory board member Uli Hoeneß made an appearance on SPORT1-Doppelpass on Sunday and let loose with a series of strong takes, including his feelings about the summer transfer window.
A few things are clear — Hoeneß believes in Bayern Munich, the moves it made this summer (and maybe the moves it did not make, too), and is convinced that the club is on the right path to success this season and beyond.
“We’re very satisfied at FC Bayern. We are the real winners of the summer transfer
window. We have a strong team and didn’t need to strengthen it much. Of course, we would have liked to have Florian Wirtz, but we’d never have bought him for €150m. We offered €55 million for Nick Woltemade, while Stuttgart wanted €75 million. In the end he went to Nottingham [Edit: Hoeneß meant Newcastle United] for €90m. What Newcastle are doing has nothing to do with football. It’s like Monopoly these days,” Hoeneß said. “We must not forget that there’s still a transfer window in January. We would have enough money for that. We’re also getting 3 ‘new signings’ for free in November with Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies and Hiroki Itō. There’s also the young players who have to play.“
In certain respects, Hoeneß is correct — Bayern Munich has assembled a very strong and capable team without critically wounding itself financially. This should bode well for future squad planning, because the summer of 2026 is when the club is expected to undergo a significant overhaul.
However, there were failures during the summer and strong examples of how not everyone in the organization are on the same page, which is concerning. While it was an effective summer, the season’s results will determine whether it was successful or not.
