Notre Dame Football is currently blessed. The Fighting Irish are under the leadership of Marcus Freeman, and they are on the brink of being a national power like something we haven’t seen since Lou Holtz paced the sidelines at Notre Dame. It’s easy to view Freeman as someone who is cut from the same cloth as Holtz because the program is on the same type of upward trajectory as what Holtz brought to South Bend in 1986.
It’s also easy to hate on a coach like Brian Kelly, but he put Notre Dame back on the
map as a program that can compete for national championships — even if he failed at doing so. He’s kind of a terrible person too, but without him, the Irish wouldn’t be where they are right now.
So… you can hate BK all you want, but he’s not the worst head coach in Notre Dame history — but who is? Who is the worst head coach in Notre Dame Football history?
Do we base our answer on winning percentage alone? Do we go with a recency bias? Was there some unforgivable acts sone under the service of the head coach? Who is it?
Notre Dame isn’t just blessed with its current leader, but it has a history of great head coaches like no other program. Knute Rockne, Frank Leahy, Ara Parsegian, and Lou Holtz form a Mount Rushmore with all of Notre Dame’s national championships. Still… the Irish have had a few bad ones — it’s okay to call it out.
