Newcastle United has received some injury news on vice-captain Joelinton after initial fears that the midfielder could be facing another lengthy absence.
Matthias Jaissle revealed following Newcastle’s preseason defeat to Bayer Leverkusen that Joelinton had suffered an unspecified injury and would miss at least the opening weeks of the campaign. The Brazilian subsequently sat out Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Liverpool and Wednesday’s 3-2 Carabao Cup win over West Brom Albion.
The Daily
Mail’s Craig Hope has now revealed the nature of the problem, reporting that Joelinton suffered a quad injury but that further assessment of the injury has yielded an encouraging prognosis.
There had been genuine concern behind the scenes that the 30-year-old could be facing another substantial spell on the sidelines. That was particularly worrying given Joelinton’s recent injury history, having undergone thigh surgery in 2024 that kept him out for approximately four months.
“Joelinton has a quad injury, but the problem is not as serious as first feared,” Hope reported. “He needed surgery on his thigh in 2024 and missed four months of the season. However, the 30-year-old does not require an operation this time and the news has been more positive in recent days.”
There is still no firm date for Joelinton’s return, with Hope reporting that the midfielder will be cleared to resume playing once his symptoms have subsided. Per Hope, Newcastle is hopeful Joelinton’s return could happen before the September international break.
“Indeed, once the symptoms subside, he will be free to return,” Hope reported. “That exact date is still to be determined, but it is hoped that will be this side of the September international break.”
Adding wood to the current fire, however, is the fact Joelinton was also appointed vice-captain behind Dan Burn before the season, meaning Jaissle is now without either member of his new leadership group as Burn also suffered a long-term injury expected to sideline him through mid-October.
How important is getting Joelinton back quickly after Newcastle’s summer overhaul, and where should he fit into Jaissle’s midfield once everyone is healthy? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
