Jordan Love is putting together one of the best seasons of his career. That’s good timing, because the Packers aren’t making things particularly easy on him.
Through eight games, Love leads the NFL with 2,246 passing yards and has thrown 16 touchdowns. He’s on pace for a franchise-record 4,772 passing yards, potentially surpassing Aaron Rodgers’ 2011 season. But there’s a caveat: Love is being asked to overcome problems that few quarterbacks could reasonably be expected to sustain.
The Packers are
averaging just 60.6 rushing yards per game, the lowest mark in the NFL over the past decade. They’re also responsible for 23 dropped passes, eight more than any other team.
Against Carolina, Green Bay managed just 66 rushing yards on 26 carries. Opposing defenses continue to make Love beat them through the air. So far, he has. His development into a quarterback capable of carrying an offense is encouraging, and the team’s 5-3 record reflects that resilience.
But there’s a difference between having a quarterback who can overcome adversity and building an offense that consistently puts him in that position. The Packers don’t need Love to do more. They need the rest of the offense to do more for him.
So what can change?
Unfortunately not much! The trade deadline is approaching, and I suppose there’s a possibility that the Packers acquire a new running back. But given the run blocking the team has displayed this year, how much difference might a better back make? Speaking of the line, it’s possible that their run blocking could improve and that could alleviate some of the issues. But don’t hold your breath there. As for pass catchers… anyone can receive a pass, but it’s catching of the pass. That’s the key. Can the Packers receivers turn that around?
In the meantime, I’m choosing to simply marvel at the fact that, through 8 games, Jordan Love seems entirely capable of keeping me entertained on Sundays. It’s extremely impressive given the circumstances, and that will have to do.
