It continues to look like the return of Kam Williams is imminent for the Kentucky Wildcats.
With SEC Tournament play set to begin Wednesday, head coach Mark Pope has a new update on his sophomore forward.
Williams, who returned to practice last Thursday, continues to practice without any setbacks.
“Kam actually practiced some limited today, Pope said during his Monday radio show. ”He practiced a few days ago and was pretty sore afterward. He went again today, so we’ll see how he feels tomorrow. He seems
like he’s getting close.“
That makes it sound like there’s a real chance Williams plays this week, especially if Kentucky can win a couple of games and make it to Friday’s quarterfinal round, which would come against the top-seeded Florida Gators. Williams missed both regular-season matchups with Florida.
At worst, it seems like Williams should be able to play in the NCAA Tournament.
Sadly, the news was not good on Jayden Quaintance, who continues to recover from swelling in his surgically repaired knee.
“JQ still has not been incorporated into practice in any meaningful, contact way. He’s a little bit further away,” said Pope.
If Quaintance doesn’t log at least some light-contact practice this week, then it’s very hard to see him playing in the first weekend of NCAA Tournament games. And it’s hard to see Kentucky making it to the second week, which makes it very hard to see Quaintance playing again this season unless there’s a big step forward in his recovery this week.
Here’s to hoping Kentucky is able to recruit Williams back for next season and not have as big of a recruiting miss as Quaintance has been.
