What a way to start the season.
Victor Wembanyama was excited to play. After eight months without basketball, the 2023 Rookie of the Year went out and dropped forty on the Mavericks on their home court,
What was lauded as Cooper Flagg’s career kickoff was soon changed to “Wemby’s World.” Wemby had six dunks, three easily classified as posters.
In fact, when Wemby hit 30 the telecast posted a graphic stating that only Victor Webanyama and Tim Duncan has scored 30 and pulled 10 boards in a season opener.
This game not only served as Flagg’s NBA debut, but Spurs Dylan Harper, making this game the first since 2015 in which the top two draft picks have met on opening night. A decade ago Karl-Anthony Towns and D’Angelo Russell started their careers as playing against one another weeks after being drafted first and second respectively.
During the game, Jay Bilas made the comment that the headlines belonged to Wemby, but Castle deserved recognition. Castle is a baller, it’s as simple as that. If his 22 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists are any indication, Castle could be a regular triple-double threat.
The game also fulfilled a vow David Jones Garcia made to his father on his deathbed, promising to play at least one NBA game. He stepped on the court in the final minutes, making good on his promise and knocking down five points with some aggressive play.
There is a lot to be grateful for, but ti is just one game.
One game down, eighty-one to go.
