Martin Ho handed Maite Oroz a rare start in Tottenham Hotspur Women’s cup game against Birmingham City. Maite looked sharp and was integral in the build up to Spurs’ first goal before a severe-looking knee injury forced her out of the game in tears. Today, Spurs confirmed the worst – Maite suffered a torn right ACL and will require surgery.

This is absolutely heartbreaking for Maite. Maite struggled for fitness and gametime under Robert Vilahamn in his abysmal Spurs side, but she was really starting
to ramp up game time under Martin Ho and looked electric in the minutes she was on the pitch against Birmingham. We were all hoping this was the start of a good spell of form for her. Instead, she’s almost certainly out for the remainder of the season.
Maite previously suffered a torn left ACL in 2018 when she was with Athletic Bilbao. Her best seasons with Real Madrid came after her recovery. She’s 27 now and has two years left on her Spurs contract, so here’s hoping there’s still more to see from her.
We wish Maite the speediest of recoveries, and we’re sending all the strength and healing vibes in her direction.
