College football has a very long history, at least by American standards. The sport started back in 1869 technically, but the game we recognize really started in the 1880’s.
For argument’s sake, let’s call it a 150 year tradition. And in that 150 years, there has never been a bigger or more glorious upset that what Appalachian State pulled off in 2007.
In this part of the country, people already knew that App State was a tough out. ASU won three straight FCS national championships from 2005-2007.
People
in the Southeast understood that Gerry Moore had built a very dangerous program, but Michigan?
Michigan did not know, and so they scheduled Appalachian for their season opener in 2007.
Compounding that, apparently some members of the Michigan football team did not take Appalachian State seriously and, let’s say, didn’t show up Saturday afternoon at their best.
The Mountaineers did though, played hard and took a 28-17 halftime lead.
The game tightened up in the second half, with Michigan going up 32-31 but App State got a field goal with :26 left then blocked Michigan’s field goal attempt as time ran out.
Keep in mind that Michigan was favored by 40 by some oddsmakers. It was one of the most incredible upsets in any sport, comparable to the Miracle On Ice and Buster Douglas’s stunning win over Mike Tyson.
