The 5-0 Minnesota Vikings face a motivated Indianapolis Colts team coming off their bye week—and every sign points to a classic NFL trap game. In this episode of The Real Forno Show, host Tyler Forness and producer Dave Stefano break down why Sunday’s matchup against the Indianapolis Colts has all the makings of a trap game—and why Minnesota must avoid complacency at all costs. Coming off a bye week with 97 of 98 analysts picking them to win, the Vikings face a Colts team that just fired general
manager Chris Ballard. “This screams trap game,” Forness said. Stefano outlined the anatomy of a trap game: “A trap game is not merely a game against an inferior opponent. It’s a confluence of a record disparity, motivational symmetry, scheduling context, and cognitive load.”
Forness emphasized that ball control may be the Vikings’ ticket to a Super Bowl run. “This offense’s number one job isn’t necessarily to score points, it’s to keep the defense off the field,” he explained. The Vikings have held the ball for over 79 minutes in their last two games, limiting Brian Flores’ top-ranked defense to just 84 snaps. Forness compared the approach to college football: “Ball control and time of possession. It’s ugly… But God, there’s beauty in watching Army versus Navy.”
On the defensive side, Flores’ unit ranks first in the NFL in points allowed at 12.8 per game and presents a nightmare for Colts quarterback Daniel Jones, who has 15 turnover-worthy plays this season. “Eric Wilson should not be this good at football, but it’s a tribute to what Brian Flores is doing,” Forness said of the 10th-year journeyman linebacker turned Pro Bowl candidate. The Colts also feature the league’s worst run defense by EPA per rush allowed, setting up Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason for a potentially big day on the ground.
Key Points:
- The Vikings have historically struggled coming out of the bye under Kevin O’Connell, losing to the Eagles in 2024 and the Lions in 2023.
- The Colts fired GM Chris Ballard mid-season, adding emotional motivation; Anthony Richardson publicly praised Ballard despite being benched.
- Indianapolis ranks last in the NFL in pressure percentage and EPA per rush allowed.
- Kyler Murray has just 18 available snaps with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson all on the field together.
- The Colts’ offensive line features Jalen Travis starting over Bernhard Raimann at left tackle, with Tanor Bortolini vulnerable against cross-dog blitzes.
- Brian Flores’ simulated pressures and six-plus-man blitzes will test Daniel Jones, who remains less than a year removed from a torn Achilles.
- Forness predicted a 27-16 Vikings victory, calling it “ugly” but effective: “It’s okay to win ugly.”
- The Colts’ star tight end Tyler Warren and wide receiver Alec Pierce are trending toward not playing.
- Shane Steichen’s tendency to abandon the run—even when leading—could play into Flores’ hands.
- “As long as you win, baby,” Forness said. “All that matters is you win another game.”
