Earlier this week, the Detroit Lions announced that there would be 10 practices during this year’s training camp that would be open to fans. Back in the day, prior to the Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes era, this announcement was typically met with much less fanfare. After all, there wasn’t as much hype around the team back then, and certainly less winning.
Nowadays if you want a ticket to one of the practices that are open to the public, it requires much more diligence and patience. There is going to be
a line, sometimes with several thousand people in it, awaiting the chance to get their tickets to a practice. While difficult to obtain, the tickets are still free, with Tuesday, July 21 at 10 a.m. ET being the first chance to grab some of your own. If you are looking for the full rules and regulations surrounding camp, you can find them on the team’s official website.
If you haven’t attended before, and you are able to make it happen, I highly suggest trying to go. It is a unique opportunity to watch the team function in a football setting outside of gameday. And if you can, try going with a few family or friends. That way you each can focus on different parts of the field.
On the other hand, if you are less of a football nerd, there is plenty to do outside of simply watching the players and coaches during practice. There will be food trucks with breakfast items and coffee, places for kids to get their faces painted, and if you play your cards right, a decent chance to get an autograph or two.
That brings us to our question of the day:
Will you be attending Lions’ training camp?
My answer: Hopefully? There were many years in the past where myself and several of my friends would make it to multiple practices during a summer. However, with almost everyone having young children at this point, and the aforementioned struggle it is to obtain these tickets now, it is not a guarantee the way it used to be.
With that said, I am really itching for some football right now, so at a minimum I will make it to one of the days that is designated for season ticket holders only. After all, I have been telling my one-year-old about the greatness of Penei Sewell for a while now, so it’s probably time she sees for herself in person.
What about you? Will you be attending a training camp practice later this summer? Let us know in the comments below.
