Jonas Urbig made his debut as Germany goalkeeper in the recently concluded international break and made a good impression on national team boss Jürgen Klopp. Urbig’s coach at Bayern, Vincent Kompany, never doubted Urbig’s ability and advised him to continuously put in the work.
“We’ve always shown a lot of faith in Jonas Urbig,” Kompany began (via Sky Germany, as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “If I say that, there’s a reason for it, because I also believe that he can take those steps. But he’s
not there yet. He’s still on that journey, and that’s why the daily work is the most important thing for me. I’m pleased that he’s coming back with positive experiences [from the national team], but that doesn’t affect what still needs to happen for his development over the coming week.
“We decided from the beginning of this season, and already last season, that playing time would be important for his development,” the Belgian continued. “We chose a very clear path, with Manu [Neuer] as the No. 1 and Jonas as the young keeper who is hopefully on his way to becoming the No. 1 for Bayern, but also for Germany, at some point. But you can’t talk your way into becoming that. You have to perform.”
Word on the street is that Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich will retire at the end of the 2026/27 season. With Urbig’s rate of improvement, however, the transition shouldn’t be difficult.
