Bayern Munich’s 2025/26 season was the season in which Luis Díaz, Michael Olise and Harry Kane all combined to form a fearsome trio, spearheading the Bavarians’ success. They became, whether rightly or wrongly, the first name on everyone’s lips when speaking of Bayern.
And they all came from the Premier League. Díaz, Olise and Kane all arrived from Liverpool Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur in expensive deals that nevertheless helped push Bayern to greater heights. Further signings from the Premier League in recent
years include the €16 million one year loan of Nicolas Jackson and the €51 million capture of João Palhinha. In just a few years, a lot of Bayern’s transfer business has centered around Premier League players. Why?
When asked about the pattern by German news site BILD, president Herbert Hainer acknowledged the trend and explained why the club was embarking on this path:
“It’s neither our philosophy nor pure coincidence,” he stated (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Many of the best footballers from around the world play in the Premier League because there’s a lot of money involved and the league is attractive. If we want to sign players who will make FC Bayern better, there are plenty of them in the Premier League.”
That makes sense, though it naturally takes a lot of money to get these players out of the rich Premier League clubs. Bayern’s 2026 transfer window saw the club avoid the Premier League entirely, for example, and one gets the feeling that the best value for money deals are to be had outside of the richest league in the world.
Then again, Bayern’s star trio are also from that league. To get the best players in the world, one needs to barter with the Premier League. Bayern will need to strike a fine balance between signing these players and developing those from outside England. So far, they seem to be doing a fine job of doing so.
