It’s not confirmation but it is good news: a report out of France suggests that Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano is set to extend his deal with the German record champions.
The 27-year-old is a critical
piece in Bayern’s backline, providing both outstanding passing range and stalwart defending. He is also the paciest option in Vincent Kompany’s aggressive, high-pressing system — not someone the Bavarians can afford losing. But his existing contract is still up in less than six months’ time, meaning Upamecano has been able to entertain offers from any club interested in his services — and there are sure to be many.
However, Le Parisien journalist Dominique Sévérac chimed in on the topic in a Q&A about Paris Saint-Germain after the New Year. As captured by @iMiaSanMia, Sévérac responded to a PSG fan query by saying: “If I understand correctly, Upamecano has decided to extend his contract with Bayern Munich…”
That is hardly a sure sign but it is a very promising signal. The preferred choice in France’s backline as well, Upamecano would have been sought after by the Parisians if he were available. Of course, there are still clubs like Real Madrid and any number of Premier League sides who could come in and make a pitch as well. But if all is quiet on the PSG front, then it is looking more and more like an extension announcement is imminent after all.
