Fulltime Observations
- After a series of middling performances, the attacking trio of Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry, and Luis Díaz dominated tonight. Maybe Harry Kane is holding this team back! Kidding…
- The defense was ruthless closing down the limited opportunities that Atalanta created. This would have been Bayern’s first clean sheet on the road this season in the Champions League, but it was ruined by a worthless goal in stoppage time.
- What a heartbreaking night for Alphonso Davies. Davies subbed on at halftime but exited in tears after 26 minutes. Jonas Urbig and Jamal Musiala also ended the match with knocks.
- Special shout-out to Josip Stanišić for scoring the game winner as revenge for Atalanta ruining Stanišić’s treble with Leverkusen in the Europa League final.
Bayern will carry this massive five-goal lead back home into the second leg against Atalanta next Wednesday. On Saturday, Bayern will travel to Leverkusen for a Bundesliga clash.
Champions League Scores
- Newcastle 1-1 Barcelona
- Atletico Madrid 5-2 Tottenham
- Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool
FT: Bayern wins!
90’+2: Goal, Atalanta. Bayern up 6-1. Mario Pašalić claws one back at the final whistle.
86’: Substitution. Raphaël Guerreiro replaces Josip Stanišić.
84’: Yellow card. Joshua Kimmich is booked for time wasting. Like Michael Olise, Kimmich will now intentionally miss the
second leg then have a clean slate for the quarterfinal against Real Madrid or Manchester City.
83’: Yellow card. Yunus Musah is booked.
77’: Yellow card. Michael Olise intentionally takes a booking for time wasting. Olise will now serve a one-match suspension in the second leg then have a clean slate for the quarterfinal against Real Madrid or Manchester City.
73’: Substitution. Lazar Samardžić replaces Kamaldeen Sulemana.
71’: Substitution. Tom Bischof replaces a sobbing Alphonso Davies. Awful moment for the young Canadian defender.
68’: Substitution. Leon Goretzka replaces Aleksandar Pavlović.
67’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 6-0. Nicolas Jackson beats the defender to the endline and finds Jamal Musiala sandwiched between two defenders for a clever flick.
67’: Substitution. Raoul Bellanova replaces Davide Zappacosta.
64’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 5-0. Michael Olise beats three defenders to the inside position and rips another curling left-footed shot.
55’: Substitutions. Honest Ahanor and Yunus Musah replace Sead Kolašinac and Nicola Zalewski.
52’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 4-0. Bayern turns a Atalanta free kick into an instant counterattack. Alphonso Davies finds Luis Díaz on the cross. Díaz’s clever flick lands at the feet of Nicolas Jackson’s feet. Jackson buries it into the corner of the net.
46’: Substitutions. Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies replace Serge Gnabry and Konrad Laimer. Berat Djimsiti replaces Gianluca Scamacca.
Halftime Observations
- In a very short amount of time, Bayern methodically dismantled Atalanta in a variety of ways. Goal #1 was purely mental. Goal #2 was world class 1v1 skill. Goal #3 was quick passing, movement, and spacing. That was arguably Bayern’s best half in 2026.
- Did you know that Michael Olise had not scored in the previous eight matches? Tonight he has already been the catalyst for three Bayern goals, including that precision shot to double the lead.
- Vincent Kompany is trying to squeeze orange juice out of a banana with Nicolas Jackson. I understand the desire to utilize him given his wages and loan fee, but he has nothing to contribute to this squad. I would rather see a double false nine system with Serge Gnabry and Leon Goretzka just wandering all over the pitch.
- There is no reason Atalanta should have a shot on target in the second half. Bayern needs to slow the game down, control possession, and rip the spirit out of the Italians with another goal or two.
Champions League Scores
- Newcastle 0-0 Barcelona
- Atletico Madrid 4-1 Tottenham
- Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool (final)
HT: Bayern up 3-0 at the break.
44’: Serge Gnabry hits the crossbar!
39’: Yellow card. Konrad Laimer is finally booked for his physical play on Kamaldeen Sulemana.
25’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 3-0. Michael Olise finds a streaking Serge Gnabry who takes a few dribbles and buries the 1v1 with the keeper.
22’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 2-0. Michael Olise cuts inside and curls a left-footed shot into the side of the net.
12’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 1-0. Michael Olise plays the corner quick to Serge Gnabry and Josip Stanišić gets a free tap-in.
1’: LET’S GOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Hopefully as a precautionary measure, Harry Kane will start the first leg on the bench. Vincent Kompany decided to roll with Nicolas Jackson as the number nine rather than inserting Jamal Musiala or Leon Goretzka in some fashion.
Thanks to an impressive second place finish in the group table stage of the Champions League, Bayern Munich enjoyed a break from the competition last month as the teams seeded 9th-24th played a two-leg knockout round. Bayern has scored multiple goals in every Champions League match this season, with the 3-1 loss to Arsenal dangling as the lone exception.
Atalanta finished 15th in the group table stage and had to survive a 2-0 loss in the first leg to Borussia Dortmund. Per usual, Dortmund choked away that lead in the first 45 minutes of the second leg. Atalanta eventually won on a penalty kick in the eighth minute of stoppage time to advance on a 4-3 aggregate scoreline.
Prediction
Bayern wins 3-1. Bayern will start with a lot of possession but fail to penetrate Atalanta’s defense. Jonathan Tah will score from a Michael Olise corner kick but Atalanta will answer right back with a free kick goal of their own. Play will turn stagnant before a series of quick passes results in a tap-in for Harry Kane. After both teams make tactical subs, Luis Díaz will lead a counterattack that ends in a goal for Jamal Musiala to give Bayern a comfortable lead heading back to Germany for the second leg.
