That San Francisco 49ers thumping the Miami Dolphins was fun, wasn’t it? That win means the 49ers are 2-0 with one divisional win. Unfortunately, the Seattle Seahawks are also 2-0, with one divisional win.
These two teams may already be on a collision course. They won’t meet until October 11, in Seattle, but that will be very important in the scheme of things. Both teams have shown they are more than capable in 2026, and the Seahawks are playing without their starting quarterback. Then again, the 49ers
are playing without some of their wide receivers, so pick your poison.
After their upcoming game against the Arizona Cardinals, the 49ers host the Denver Broncos and then face the aforementioned Seahawks. That’s two decent defenses back-to-back. If we want to know just how good this offense is, we can chat after those two games to see how things turned out. If the 49ers keep hanging 30, then a lot has been solidified.
The Seahawks are a long way off, but that game, when it is on the schedule, should give us some firm answers on what the 49ers have.
Speaking of Seattle…
Seattle Seahawks (2-0)/Arizona Cardinals (1-1)
It wasn’t until the third quarter that the Seahawks managed to open the floodgates on the Cardinals. Though that happened in the third quarter, there were still a couple of Jaxon Smith-Njigba catches to see, including his touchdown.
To be honest, the Cardinals might have been in this longer than necessary thanks to a second-quarter Jadarian Price fumble. A fumble that led nowhere. The same goes for the Cardinals’ two-minute offense and the Seahawks’ equally fruitless 30-second offense.
The third quarter came in, and the Seahawks scored 24 unanswered points on three touchdowns and a field goal. Smith-Njigba had two of those touchdowns to add to the one he had in the first half to finish with nine receptions for 155 yards.
31-7 Seahawks. Divisional win and now a tie with the 49ers.
So how did Drew Lock do backing up that Seahawks offense? 19-26, 235 yards passing, and three touchdowns. This led to a 138.1 passer rating. If you hoped Sam Darnold’s absence would lead to a weaker Seahawks team, you’ll be disappointed.
Los Angeles Rams (1-1)
For a hot minute, there was hope the New York Giants could be competitive. Then Giants quarterback Jackson Dart exited the game in the first offensive series, reportedly with an MCL sprain. That means Jameis Winston was next man up.
Uh-oh.
What followed was the Winston experience for Giants fans to endure. That experience was 11 completions (of 27 attempts), 111 yards passing, one interception, and zero touchdowns. 28-6, Rams.
Even thisawful roughing the kicker (or running into the kicker) no-call wouldn’t have helped much. I’m sure the Rams will credit their defense for this amazing game. I credit them with getting Jameis Winston after the first offensive series. That can do wonders for a defense. Turnovers also help, and since the Giants defense got an interception and a fumble, they had some opportunities. It’s hard to cash those in when your starting quarterback is hurt.
Speaking of defense, there wasn’t much of it from the Giants either. Injuries can hurt that part as well, especially the backfield. Matthew Stafford went 22-for-31 for 327 yards passing, four touchdowns, an interception, and a passer rating of 131.3. Running backs Kyren Williams and Blake Corum combined their powers for 163 yards rushing. The Rams offense had their way with the Giants.
Great job, Rams. Now do it without the starting quarterback getting injured. Or an injury-decimated backfield.
Onto Week 3
The 49ers have a chance to regain the NFC West lead as they host the Arizona Cardinals. The fact that the Cardinals beat the Chargers (which should be a better team) and stayed close to the Seahawks until the third quarter tells you all you need to know: This game is no gimme and the biggest test the 49ers have yet. The odds have the 49ers favored by over a touchdown, but the Cardinals always play the 49ers hard, so I’d expect this to be close. Should the 49ers go to 3-0 and 2-0 in the division, that gives them a lot of cushioning for later in the season.
The Seahawks will be facing the Washington Commanders. The Commanders already have their backs against the wall with the dreaded 0-2 start. To make matters worse, they lost quarterback Jayden Daniels Sunday to a dislocated elbow. It’s safe to say he might not be available for Sunday’s game. How Seahawks of it for them to fly across the country and face the No. 2 quarterback.
The Rams have the Philadelphia Eagles. I know it sounds dirty, but we are Eagles fans. Eagles fans, we’d love to see the dream team go to a 1-2. You know what to do.
