Maybe now they’ll fix how shiny the jerseys will look too.
The Sixers announced that there will be another addition to some of their throwback nights that are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the 2000-01
Eastern Conference champions. They’ll don the popular black jerseys from that era, and will be joined by Hip Hop, the mascot from that time as well.
In a release, the team said that Hip Hop will be at certain games this season, starting with Saturday November 8th against the Toronto Raptors, the first throwback celebration night of the season. His following appearances will be announced at a later date. The Sixers have 14 of these nights this season in total.
As someone who grew up a Sixers fan, Kyle Lowry was asked at Media Day about what it means to him to get to wear that jersey. After fondly rattling off some of his players, he requested that the team bring back Hip Hop, and they have obliged.
Lowry also requested that the font on the front of the jerseys be shinier, as well as the sleeves being properly cut and he’s right about both of those things.
It would appear that this will be a genuine return of the original. Alex Coffey of the Inquirer has reported that Bill Roth, who played Hip Hop from 1998-2011.
Hip Hop hasn’t been seen since before the 2011 lockout. It appears those CBA negotiations can really get nasty. The team went four dark years, depending on your point of view, without a mascot before Franklin the Dog was introduced.
