GOAL #1 for Marquette women’s basketball against Georgetown on Sunday was achieved 65 seconds in as Lee Volker hit a three-pointer for the first points of the game. That made the score 3-0 in favor of the Golden
Eagles, and by default, this meant that MU would not fall behind 19-0 against the Hoyas as they did in Milwaukee earlier this season.
In fact, Marquette spent a lot of this game proving that the entirety of that 40 minutes was a fluke and a mistake. MU led by as many as nine in the first quarter, 14 in the second, 16 in the third, and 17 in the fourth. Large chunks of this game were derived from Marquette finishing the game with an effective field goal percentage of nearly 61%. They connected on over 57% of their two-pointers and over 46% of their three-pointers, including a stellar 4-for-6 from behind the arc from Lee Volker.
However, large chunks of this game also involved Marquette committing 23 turnovers, 21 after the first quarter ended. Six giveaways in the second quarter helped Georgetown take a 26-12 Marquette lead with 4:20 to play before halftime down to just 28-25 Marquette with 34 seconds left. That’s a 13-2 run, and it was not fun.
Six more turnovers contributed to Georgetown turning a six point lead shortly after halftime to a one point game, 35-34, with just over 6:17 left to go in the quarter. Thankfully, Jaidynn Mason had about enough of that, and seven straight from her in about 90 seconds jumpstarted a 17-2 Marquette run that had MU up 16 with 41 seconds left in the frame.
Finally, Marquette committed a whopping NINE turnovers in the fourth quarter. The Hoyas did not accept these gifts very well, as Georgetown shot just 7-for-16 in the fourth quarter, and that helped Marquette out in a big way. The Golden Eagles were able to tenuously hold onto a lead, letting a 17 point edge with 7:15 left drift as close as nine with 1:39 to play and eight with 1:10 left. There was an ever so slight air of a problem at that point, if Marquette couldn’t get a bucket and Georgetown could hit a three, there would be real problems. But Kennedi Perkins had a tough take to the rim for two, her only points of the game, and that made it 10 with 47 seconds left and the Hoyas didn’t have time to do anything else.
The three-point shooting led Lee Volker to the team lead in points here as she had 22 to go with four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Jaidynn Mason added 10 to go with six rebounds and three assists, and Halle Vice had yet another double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and she had five assists, too.
The mystery of What’s Up With Skylar Forbes? continues as Charia Smith started once again in Forbes’ place. Forbes finished with 11 points, three rebounds, and four blocks off the bench in 28 minutes, which raises a lot of questions about why she’s not starting if she’s going to play that much anyway. Jordan Meulemans was on the bench for this game in D.C., but she was out once again. Good enough to travel is a positive sign, so we’ll see where things go from here.
Up Next: The win here combined with Creighton beating Seton Hall earlier in the day moved Marquette into a tie with the Pirates for third place in the Big East. MU’s chance to break out of the tie comes on Wednesday when they host Providence at the McGuire Center. Tipoff is set for 6:30pm Central time, and ESPN+ will have the broadcast. The Friars dropped to 3-9 in Big East action with a 62-57 home loss to St. John’s on Saturday.
