Maryland football’s Dontay Joyner returned to the field against Ohio State Saturday after missing the first five games of the season. The cornerback received some good news regarding his ongoing court battles Thursday, as he was handed probation before judgment, a sentencing which will see the court withhold a final decision following Joyner’s guilty plea as long as certain conditions are met.
According to reporter Michael Howes of the Baltimore Sun, Joyner’s docket lists a 90-day jail term for each of his four counts, with all 90 days suspended. It also lists 98 days of supervised probation and 2 years, 267 days of unsupervised probation.
If Joyner violates his probation, the court reserves its right to enter into judgment and impose sentences, according to Howes.
This development could be the final step in a legal battle which has extended for months. Now, Joyner — and the rest of the team — will turn to the game against Rutgers on Saturday, which could be a pivotal result in maintaining bowl eligibility for Maryland.
