Hey, here’s one out the door! Earlier in the window (i.e. a few hours ago) the news was that Girona was hoping Spurs would terminate Bryan Gil’s contract so he could join up with the La Liga team on a free transfer. Now, it’s official — Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the departure of Gil to Girona in a €10m (£8.5m) deal.
While it’s probably okay to celebrate Gil’s departure
considering he barely did anything as a member of Tottenham, let’s also remember that we paid £21.5m PLUS Erik Lamela to Sevilla for his signature back in 2021. That makes him unironically one of Tottenham’s worst-ever signings. Gil was just uniquely unsuited for Premier League football — a young skills-based player who was slight enough to be bullied off the ball at the slightest touch.
I have no doubt Gil can carve out a successful career in professional football in Spain, but it won’t be in England and it won’t be with Tottenham Hotspur. And in that context, getting £8.5m from him with two years left on his deal is actually a pretty astute piece of business. And good thing they did too, as Girona is a City Group club and it’d be pretty ridiculous NOT to get at least SOMETHING out of this deal.
Good luck, Bryan. Wish things had worked out better. We’ll always have Abbey Road.
