It’s been a tale of two games for the Michigan Wolverines. They were strong in the season opener in a 34-17 win over New Mexico, and struggled in a 24-13 road loss to the Oklahoma
Sooners.
When losses occur, self-evaluation must follow, or a team is destined to repeat the same mistakes. In Michigan’s loss, there were multiple areas of concern, and improvements are needed.
In this edition of SB Nation Reacts, we want to know what you think is the biggest area of concern for Michigan.
- Michigan’s offensive line didn’t give quarterback Bryce Underwood much time to operate. Underwood was constantly pressured. Oklahoma had 8 tackles for loss.
- Michigan’s wideouts didn’t gain separation with enough consistency. Only one Michigan receiver hauled in more than one reception (Donaven McCulley with three), and only three wideouts had receptions in all.
- With tight end Marlin Klein sidelined, Michigan’s other tight ends didn’t have an impact in the passing game. Zack Marshall was the only tight end with a reception.
- Michigan’s secondary gave up some deep shots to Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer. While Mateer is arguably one of the best quarterbacks in the nation, the secondary looks like a unit that needs to improve.
- Michigan’s offensive playcalling was confusing. Granted, the offensive line wasn’t blocking well, but the amount of screens that offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey dialed up was puzzling against an Oklahoma defense that was flying downhill and snuffing them out. Further, there were times when Michigan ran three plays in a row and unsuccessfully against a stacked box. Why not take a deep shot or two when there are favorable looks like that? Lastly, Bryce Underwood wasn’t utilized as a runner — that will have to change in the future.
