While it lacks in Big 12 series wins, Arizona has no shortage of weekly pitching honors from the conference.
Senior left-hander Luc Fladda has been named Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week, the third Wildcat arm to get recognized this season and second in as many weeks. Sophomore righty Smith Bailey was Pitcher of the Week last week and junior righty Owen Kramkowski was honored in March.
Fladda, a transfer from Tulane, threw 6.2 shutout innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts in Thursday’s 6-0 win over BYU. For the season he is 3-1 with a 4.92 ERA, his five walks in 56.2 innings ranking him fourth nationally in BB/9 (0.79) while ranking sixth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (9.8).
Bailey was honored after throwing six innings of one-hit ball on April 18 against Kansas State, striking out 15 to finish one shy of the school record for a conference game. Kramkowski got his recognition after six shutout innings and a career-best 12 Ks against Fresno State on March 6.
As a team, Arizona’s ERA (5.35) ranks just outside the top 100 nationally and is fourth in the Big 12, while in conference play it’s fourth at 6.02.
The Wildcats (16-26, 7-14 Big 12) visit GCU for a nonconference game Tuesday before traveling to conference-leading Kansas (33-11, 17-4) for a weekend series. Arizona’s final regular season homestand begins May 6 against New Mexico State followed by three against Houston May 8-10.
