The first member of the 2022 Seattle Seahawks draft class to receive a contract extension is an offensive lineman, but it’s not Charles Cross.
Starting right tackle Abe Lucas has been given a three-year extension worth $46 million, with the potential for more money through incentives. This comes shortly after Tampa Bay Buccaneers right tackle Luke Goedeke, taken 18 picks before Lucas, received a four-year, $90 million deal
.This is only the second time ever that Seahawks general manager John Schneider has given one of his drafted offensive linemen a contract extension. Justin Britt previously signed a three-year, $27 million extension to be Seattle’s starting center.
Lucas was a third round pick out of Washington State, immediately earning the starting job as a rookie. A knee injury on opening day of 2023 led to him missing much of his second season and the subsequent procedures caused him to miss the first half of 2024. It is, presumably, why the Seahawks were able to extend him at such an inexpensive cost. When healthy, Lucas and Cross figure to be the book-end franchise tackles that the team has yearned for since the end of the Walter Jones-Sean Locklear days.
If you wanted to see the Seahawks make real investments on the offensive line, which includes keeping your own talent, you’re getting your wish. All eyes will now be on what lies ahead for left tackle Charles Cross, who had his fifth-year option picked up by the Seahawks earlier this offseason and thus he won’t hit free agency in 2026, but he’ll surely cost a lot more than Lucas will.
In the meantime, congrats to Abe and here’s to a healthy 2025 and beyond!
